A Rich History Founded on Persistence, Dedication and\u00a0Excellence<\/h5>\n

Master Furniture\u00a0has been a valued\u00a0Edmonton\u00a0institution since the late 1960’s. A young Steve Wheeler joined the business\u00a0under the Schenk’s family brand name after he began\"master his\u00a0career as a\u00a0furnace painter and cabinet\u00a0finisher. In 1968, after Casey and Ted Schenk initially\u00a0refused to hire Steve, they changed their minds after he\u00a0convinced them of his woodworking passion. As the decades passed, Steve’s dedication became evident with\u00a0his growing skills and high-quality results. Today,\u00a0Steve is\u00a0a shining example of a consummate woodcraft artist who makes\u00a0his own refinishing “shines,”\u00a0handles traditional and modern\u00a0tools with deftness and shows his respect for\u00a0the trust that people place in him with an unwavering attention to detail.<\/p>\n

Master Furniture Refinisher<\/h5>\n

Rick’s\u00a0story starts with entrepreneurship–a family tradition emphasized by his grandfather who owned a moving company in the 1950’s. Rick followed in his grandfather’s footsteps to own\u00a0two moving companies\u00a0that he has since sold but that continue to enjoy excellent local\u00a0brand recognition.\u00a0Rick discovered his woodworking calling\u00a0approximately 10 years ago when he\u00a0brought in a piece of fine furniture for Steve to repair:\u00a0“Within a short period of time he\u00a0had sanded, repaired, color matched and added the finish,” explains Rick. “I was impressed. The only telltale [sign] that the repair had been done was the absence of an intricate gold inlay that ran down the length of the piece. I thanked him for the work–more than happy with the repair. Steve then held\u00a0up his finger and walked\u00a0away, returning with his artist brush and gold paint. After eyeing it up and down he very delicately applied the gold to match to perfection.”<\/p>\n

Steve’s skills and artistry\u00a0impressed Rick so much that\u00a0he continued to bring Steve furniture\u00a0and even set up his own fabricating shop where he honed skills in\u00a0designing, prototyping and fabricating items utilizing wood, metal, plastics, fiberglass,\u00a0leathers, webbing and lighter materials. Steve eventually\u00a0became Rick’s mentor and friend. Rick, who had been fascinated by woodworking as a child,\u00a0took each lesson to\u00a0heart to create fantastic pieces for himself and others. After a sports injury, Rick decided to use his free time to learn more and eventually gained employment at a woodworking company. When Steve called him in May to tell him that owners wanted to sell the shop,\u00a0Rick realized that it was too great an opportunity to pass up:\u00a0“I did not hesitate,” explains\u00a0Rick. “I am very excited to be working side by side with my mentor and look forward to the years to come.”<\/p>\n

Reclaiming the Past: The People Who Seek Craftsmanship<\/h5>\n

Homeowners\u00a0like Cary and Nancy Dougherty\u00a0in\u00a0Louisiana\u00a0are a great example of one type of people who help guarantee the continuation of the wood furniture restoration\u00a0tradition.
